Un aspecto que no causo expectativas falsas y molestias a lo largo del día fue que no se hablo mucho de las condiciones del record que la fundación Mozilla desea imponer, a mi me hubiera parecido lógico que empezara a las 00:00 del GMT, pero no, escogieron otra hora y eso provoco algunas confusiones y errores o hasta discusiones como paso en el blog de mi buen amigo Andrés B, que quiso revisar Firefox desde muy temprano y sus muchos lectores españoles se le fueron a la yugular.

Ahora, si eres un usuario que utiliza muchas extensiones ya viviste el trauma de pasar a la versión 2.0 y saber que muchas ya no funiconaran o por lo menos no de momento, pero también hay que recordar que algunas pasan a formar parte del navegador base, tienes opciones

La primera, la más cómoda, la que eligen los que siguen usando Internet Explorer 6, quedate así y espera a que las adapten, porten o renueven.

La temeraria, al toro por los cuernos, respalda tus favoritos, tus contraseñas y desinstala la versión anterior y personaliza la 3.0 hasta que estés a gusto (tampoco es necesario que desinstales todo, pero tus extensiones van estar ahí esperando nueva versión)

La «Lo mejor de los dos mundos» , aprovechate de las versiones de portableapps y usa las dos, puedes bajar la 2.0.0.14 en versión portable y copiar todos tus settings, ya sea a un folder de tu disco duro o a una llave USB y mantener tu funcionalidad actual, mientras instalas, corres y pruebas Firefox 3.0 o si no quieres que algo falle, estrena la 3.0 que ya llegó a portableapps y corre esa desde una llave.

We should pay attention to the SP1 Overview and the changes for the Release Candidate.

Microsoft continuously improves the Windows Vista® Operating System by providing ongoing updates while working with software and hardware vendors to help them to deliver improved compatibility, reliability and performance. These updates are provided to customers directly by our hardware and software partners, as well as from Microsoft in the form of hotfixes distributed on a regular basis using Windows Update. Updates to Windows are also delivered directly to some affected customers and preinstalled by PC manufacturers.

Windows Vista SP1 is an update to Windows Vista that, along with improvements delivered via these other channels, addresses feedback from our customers and partners. By providing these fixes integrated into a single service pack which will be thoroughly tested by Microsoft and by industry partners and customers during the beta cycle, Microsoft provides a single high quality update that minimizes deployment and testing complexity for customers.

In addition to all previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also will continue to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage Windows Vista. Service Packs are not intended to be a vehicle for releasing significant new features or functionality; however some existing components do gain slightly enhanced functionality in SP1 to support industry standards and new requirements.

This document describes many of the notable changes in Windows Vista SP1, with the exception of some updates to the Windows Genuine Advantage experience which we are still developing for our customers and will be released in a later build. For additional information about the changes in SP1, please see the forthcoming Knowledge Base (KB) article 936332, which is a compendium of all prior KB articles documenting updates to Windows Vista. Many of these updates are already publicly available and have been released via the Microsoft Download Center or Windows Update. All of these updates are included in Windows Vista SP1. The full list of these updates can be read in Hotfixes and Security Updates included in Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

Organizations do not need to wait for SP1 to deploy Windows Vista; we encourage them to begin their Windows Vista evaluation and deployment now.

Setup Prerequisites
Windows Vista SP1 requires two prerequisite packages to install; a third is required for versions of Windows Vista that are BitLocker™ Drive Encryption capable (Window Vista Enterprise and Windows Vista Ultimate).
• The first of the three prerequisite packages required for the service pack includes updates to the servicing stack—the component that handles installation and removal of software updates, language packs, and optional windows features. This update is necessary to successfully install and uninstall the service pack; it also improves the performance and reliability of the service pack installation.
• The second of the three prerequisite packages includes updates required to reliably install or uninstall the service pack.
• The third of the three prerequisite packages contains an update necessary for proper servicing of Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption capable PCs.

Service Pack 1 Size
In order to make the improvements detailed in this document, a large number of individual files and components have been updated for SP1. Also, the language-neutral design of Windows Vista necessitates that the service pack be able to update any possible combination of the basic languages supported by Windows Vista with a single installer, so language files for the 36 basic languages are included in the standalone installer.

These facts result in a large stand-alone package, which is the delivery vehicle typically used by system administrators. (See Table 1 below for an explanation of the different delivery mechanisms for Windows Vista SP1.) However, most home and small business users will receive SP1 via Windows Update, which utilizes an efficient transfer mechanism to download only the actual bytes changed, resulting in an approximately 65MB download. This is similar in size to many common software and driver updates delivered by other software vendors over the internet and will not be a problem for most customers.

Things that look promising

  • Adds support for new UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) industry standard PC firmware for 64-bit systems with functional parity with legacy BIOS firmware, which allows Windows Vista SP1 to install to GPT format disks, boot and resume from hibernate using UEFI firmware.
  • Adds support for Direct3D® 10.1, an update to Direct3D 10 that extends the API to support new hardware features, enabling 3D application and game developers to make more complete and efficient use of the upcoming generations of graphics hardware.
  • Adds support for exFAT, a new file system supporting larger overall capacity and larger files, which will be used in Flash memory storage and consumer devices.
  • Enhances support for high density drives by adding new icons and labels that will identify HD-DVD and Blu-ray Drives as high density drives.
  • Enhances the MPEG-2 decoder to support content protection across a user accessible bus on Media Center systems configured with Digital Cable Tuner hardware. This also effectively enables higher levels of hardware decoder acceleration for commercial DVD playback on some hardware.
  • Improves reliability by preventing data-loss while ejecting NTFS-formatted removable-media.
  • Improves Windows Vista’s built-in file backup solution to include EFS encrypted files in the backup.
  • Improves the speed of adding and extracting files to and from a compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Improves performance over Windows Vista’s current performance across the following scenarios1:

• 25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine
• 45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system
• 50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system

Windows Service Pack Blocker Tool Kit

Muchísimos usuarios de Windows Vista claman (o clamaban) por la llegada del Service pack que les ayudara a que su aplicación o pieza de hardware funcionara de una **/-#$*** vez con este sistema operativo, pero no todos los responsables de sistemas o los encargados de IT por alguna razón están de buenas con la inminente actualización de sistemas operativos, a todos nos ha pasado que nuestro periférico , aplicación o juego favorito deja de funcionar del modo adecuado cuando actualizamos a la más nueva versión del sistema operativo y en algunas ocasiones las aplicaciones internas o propietarias de la empresa (que no tienen a quien echarle la culpa cuando dejan de trabajar) que no pueden detenerse son las que ya funciona de milagro y también están los usuarios que de todo se quejan y a los que todos les falla, entonces para que los pobres hombres encargados de sistemas puedan hacer pruebas y estar seguros de que todo va a funcionar antes de liberar los parches tienen esta herramienta de Microsoft para evitar la actualización vía Internet por algún momento.

Overview

A blocking tool is available for organizations that would like to temporarily prevent installation of Service Pack updates through Windows Update. This tool can be used with:

  • Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (valid through March, 2008)
  • Windows XP Service Pack 3 (valid for 12 months following general availability)
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (valid for 12 months following general availability)

This toolkit contains three components. All of them function primarily to set or clear a specific registry key that is used to detect and block download of Service Packs from Windows Update. You only need to use the component which best serves your organization’s computer management infrastructure.

  • A Microsoft-signed executable
  • A script
  • An ADM template
  1. The executable creates a registry key on the computer on which it is run that blocks or unblocks (depending on the command-line option used) the delivery of a Service Pack to that computer through Windows Update. The key used is HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate.

    When the ‘/B’ command line option is used, the key value name ‘DoNotAllowSP’ is created and its value set to 1. This value blocks delivery of a Service Pack to the computer through Automatic Update or Windows Update.

    When the ‘/U’ command line option is used, the previously created registry value that temporarily blocked the delivery of a Service Pack to the computer through Automatic Update or Windows Update is removed. If the value does not exist on the computer on which it is run, no action is taken.

  2. The script does the same thing as the executable, but allows you to specify the remote machine name on which to block or unblock delivery of Service Packs.

    3. Note that the executable and script have been tested only as a command-line tool and not in conjunction with other systems management tools or remote execution mechanisms.

  3. The ADM template allows administrators to import group policy settings to block or unblock delivery of Service Packs into their Group Policy environment. Administrators can then use Group Policy to centrally execute the action across systems in their environment.

Please note that this toolkit will not prevent the installation of the service pack from CD/DVD, or from the stand-alone download package. This simply prevents the service pack from being delivered over Windows Update.

Microsoft y sus Service packs

Microsoft lanzara en las próximas semanas tres services pack, dos de ellos muy esperado y otro no tan esperado pero que también podrá aliviar algunos dolores de cabeza, ya están disponibles para los beta Testers uno de salida inminente, por ello ya sabemos más o menos que esperar.

Esos parches son:

  • El esperado Service Pack 3 para Windows XP
  • El aún más esperado Service Pack 1 para Windows Vista
  • El primer Service pack para Office 2007

El primer parche, el SP3 de XP, se ha hecho esperar su bendito tiempo, en parte porque en algún momento se canalizaron una gran parte de los recursos de Microsoft al desarrollo de Vista (y ni así), de lo que ha logrado colar en la web desde hace unos días es que aparentemente mejora el rendimiento de los sistemas con Windows XP, lo que se me hace difícil de medir y aún más de percibir totalmente pues los equipos actuales ya mastican el XP sin muchos problemas pero ciertamente es un agradable valor agregado y seguirá siendo una buena opción permanecer en Windows XP hasta que Vista este a la altura.

El aclamado Sp1 de Windows Vista que mucho esperamos para ver si migrábamos mejora la compatibilidad (básicamente es una colección de los parche que se han ido lanzando en este año que Vista lleva con nosotros) y en ara de mejorar la imagen dela empresa de Redmond modificara el comportamiento de la molesta WGA (especialmente molesta para los usuarios legales que sufren de falsos positivos)

Por último y que ya estará aquí el próximo jueves el Service Pack 1 de Office 2007, otra colección de actualizaciones lanzadas desde la llegada del producto y que lo pone a punto para trabajar con la versión 2008 de Windows Server.

The use of Automatic Update (AU) Deployment has been a concern we have heard from many customers in recent months. Because of this, the 2007 Office System SP1 will not be released to AU immediately. Instead, the Microsoft Office System team will provide guidance as to a date at which we will begin throttling up so that you have time to educate yourself on what is in SP1 and determine the best method for you to deploy it in your environment.

The Open Handset Alliance, a group of mobile and technology leaders, today announced the availability of the Android Software Development Kit (SDK). Available now as an early look, the Android SDK will enable developers to create innovative and compelling applications for the platform. The early look will also provide developers with the opportunity to participate in the evolution of the Android platform by providing feedback throughout the development process.

The Android platform was built from the ground up to enable developers to create new and innovative mobile applications that take full advantage of all the capabilities of a handset connected to the internet. It is a complete mobile platform built on the Linux 2.6 kernel that exposes a robust operating system, a comprehensive set of libraries, a rich multimedia user interface, and a complete set of phone applications. Android’s innovative application model makes it easy for developers to extend, replace, and reuse existing software components to create rich and integrated mobile services for consumers. The Android platform also includes the Dalvik virtual machine to maximize application performance, portability, and security. The entire platform will be made available under the very liberal, developer-friendly Apache v2 open-source license in 2008.

Android Software Development Kit

The SDK contains a rich set of tools for developers to build applications for the Android platform. Included are advanced development and debugging tools, a rich set of libraries, a true device emulator, in-depth documentation, sample projects, tutorials, FAQs, and more. For developers looking for a seamless development experience, an Eclipse plugin is included to integrate these tools with the Eclipse integrated development environment. The site hosting the kit will also feature a blog and discussion groups, to make it easier for everyone contributing to the platform to interact and share knowledge.

Requirements

To begin building applications for Android, developers will need to download the Android SDK to an x86-based computer running Windows XP or Vista; Mac OS 10.4.8 or later; or Linux Ubuntu Dapper Drake or later (other modern distributions of Linux will also likely work but are not directly supported).

Developers will also need Eclipse 3.2 or later, with Java Development Tools and the Android SDK’s plugin, or Java and Javac 1.5 or 1.6; Apache Ant; an integrated development environment; and Python 2.2 or later.
